Main Ingredients

1 tbsp smoked olive oil

2/3 c smoked balsamic vinegar

2 tbsp finely chopped shallot

2 cloves garlic

1 c tomato sauce

1/4 c dark brown sugar

1/3 c honey or molasses

1/2 c dark chocolate chips

1/4 c spicy mustard

2 tsp sea salt

4 tbsp teeny tiny chocolate chili spice blend*

2 tbsp horseradish (may use horseradish mustard instead)

1 tbsp bourbon smoked paprika

*if you don’t have teeny tiny spice blend (and you should, it’s delicious! ), add these ingredients instead:

1 tsp cocoa powder

1 tsp habanero chili, finely chopped

1 tsp ancho chili powder

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp allspice

1/2 tsp oregano

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 tsp ground coffee (we like to use starbucks via, one sleeve will do here)


1In a small bowl, combine tomato sauce, molasses/honey, brown sugar, all spices, chocolate chips and smoked balsamic. Set aside.

2Heat oil in a saucepan then add garlic and shallot and cook until shallot is translucent; keep stirring so garlic doesn’t burn.

3Reduce heat to low and add tomato mixture. Simmer for about 20 minutes to meld flavors; stir to prevent sticking to pan. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.
