Red Devil's Food Cake
After some research, I found this recipe in an old Ladies Home Journal recipe book handed down from my great grandmother. The recipe creates a natural red without the use of food coloring. Beautiful and moist cake with a hint of cocoa.

2 c cake flour
1/2 c unsweetened natural cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 c butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 c sugar
1/2 c buttermilk
1/2 c boiling water
1Sift flour with cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Cream the butter with vanilla and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the well-beaten eggs; beat until blended.
2Add the sifted dry ingredients alternating with the buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
3Poor in boiling water and beat until smooth.
4Divide into 2 8-inch prepared cake pans. Bake 350 for 35 minutes.
5Let stand 5 minutes in pans before turning out onto cooling rack. Cool completely.
6Frost as desired.
Original recipe calls to frost with boiled frosting. I dressed the cake with whipped cream for something different.
